Profile
Dr. Chimanjita Phukan brings 25 years of academic, clinical, and research leadership in microbiology and infectious diseases. She earned her MBBS from Assam Medical College, MD in Microbiology from Gauhati Medical College, and PhD from the Department of Biotechnology, Gauhati University. Her career spans through progressive roles to Professor and Head of Microbiology at Government Medical Colleges of Assam.
She has held pivotal positions as Laboratory Director and Nodal Officer for national programs on HIV, STI, infectious disease surveillance, vector-borne diseases, and One Health. She pioneered the establishment of RSTRRL and PPCL coordinating centers for Northeast India and facilitating the National AMR Network in Assam. She serves as National Resource Faculty on HIV, STI, and antimicrobial resistance.
Internationally, she was awarded the ICMR‑DHR Senior Biomedical Scientist Fellowship at UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco in 2020 and served as International Ambassador for SHEA in 2013, contributing extensively to global initiatives with SHEA and WHO. A prolific researcher and mentor, she has guided MD, PhD, and MSc dissertations, published widely on antimicrobial resistance, hospital infections, and outbreak management.
She served as principal investigator in various DBT and ICMR‑funded projects and multinational projects. Her contributions to infection prevention are notable, including convening the XIVth National HISI Conference in Guwahati in 2017.
