Dr Uday Kelkar is retired Additional Director, Central Government Health Services, Pune, following a 34-year career with the Central Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, and currently serves as Assistant Professor in Microbiology at H.V. Desai College of Optometry.
Dr Uday Kelkar is a microbiologist with over 25 years of experience in hospital infection control, with particular expertise in the surveillance and monitoring of high-risk hospital areas, and in sterilization and disinfection practices. Dr Kelkar has been an active member of HISI’s executive body, serving as Vice-President. His international engagement includes scholarships at the XIth IFIC Congress in Italy (2012) and the XIIth IFIC Congress in Croatia (2013), and he served as International Ambassador for the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), Atlanta, in 2016.
His research has been published in journals including the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Infection Control, the Journal of Hospital Infection, and the International Journal of Infection Control, covering topics such as microbiological surveillance of ophthalmic operating rooms, steam sterilization monitoring, bacteriology of diabetic foot ulcers, and fungal contamination from air conditioning units in hospital settings. He has presented at over twenty-five national, regional, and local conferences, and has served as guest speaker, expert, and chairperson at two international conferences.
